Direct Selling Association Inducts Dick and Doug DeVos into Hall of Fame, Presents Amway Co-Founder with Lifetime Achievement Award

June 6, 2012

Washington, D.C. (June 6, 2012) – The U.S. Direct Selling Association (DSA) today inducted Amway president Doug DeVos and his brother, former Amway president Dick DeVos, into the Direct Selling Hall of Fame.

Second-generation leaders of Amway and sons of company Co-Founder Rich DeVos, Dick and Doug received the industry's highest honor at the 2012 DSA Annual Meeting in Grapevine, Texas, in recognition of their significant years of service and considerable contributions to the Direct Selling Association, the Direct Selling Education Foundation and the direct selling industry.

"The leadership and vision Dick and Doug DeVos have provided to the Direct Selling Association over many years made their induction into the DSA Hall of Fame an obvious choice,” said DSA President Joseph Mariano. “The tireless efforts of both of these extraordinary men to serve the interests of not only Amway, but the entire direct selling community, have been a source of inspiration.”

Doug became president of Amway in 2002, and currently leads the company with Chairman Steve Van Andel. Dick held the position from 1993 to 2002. Both have served as Chairman of the DSA Board of Directors.

Doug also served as DSEF Chairman and was presented with the DSEF Circle of Honor Award in 2009. He currently serves as the treasurer of the World Federation of Direct Selling Associations (WFDSA). Dick has previously served as Chairman of WFDSA.

The award was presented by Rich DeVos to his sons. Amway Co-Founders Rich DeVos and the late Jay Van Andel were inducted into the DSA Hall of Fame in 1979 and 1987, respectively.

Rich DeVos also was recognized during the event with a Lifetime Achievement Award for his remarkable contributions that, with Jay Van Andel, pioneered a sales and marketing plan that revolutionized the direct selling industry and has been the model for new businesses entering the field ever since. The second generation leaders of these two enterprising families have taken the company to new heights as ambassadors of entrepreneurship, sharing their belief that business ownership is a path to personal and economic freedom. They have contributed greatly to revitalize the West Michigan community, their home market, by making long-term investments in the arts, educational programs and more to fulfill the company’s vision: to help people live better lives.

“Rich DeVos has provided more than 50 years of incomparable service and leadership to the industry, which has helped to expand the worldwide reach and influence of this incredible business model,” said Mariano. “It is truly an honor to celebrate the footprint Rich has made in direct selling.”

About the Direct Selling Association
DSA is the national trade association of the leading firms that manufacture and distribute goods and services sold directly to consumers. Among its more than 250 active and pending members are companies selling both via a party plan method and in the traditional person-to-person style. In 2010, U.S. direct sales were nearly $29 billion with more than 15.8 million direct sellers nationwide. The vast majority are independent business people – micro-entrepreneurs – whose purpose is to sell the product/service of the company they voluntarily choose to represent. Approximately 90 percent of direct sellers operate their business part-time. For more information on direct selling, DSA and its Code of Ethics, please visit the DSA website at www.dsa.org.
